A friend of mine sent me this link and the associated video.

His attitude was “Ha Ha, look at what wimps the young liberals are turning out to be.”
Well, I wasn’t sure what “chalking” was, although I had a pretty good idea. A little research brought up this: from another campus where chalking occurred.

Chalking is not the exchange of ideas, it’s done to intimidate.
This is not just pro trump, the messages and locations are not an accident.
Hate speech should be distinguished from free speech.
Lets not forget that the Hitler youth were fond of scrawling slogans on walls…

Free speech include the speech of hateful morons. College is supposed to be, in part, learning to deal with the real world and people disagreeing with you…and you learning to deal with it either with ignoring it, debating it, or discrediting it. “Rough men”…as in those willing to violence…are going to be less needed when there’s “slightly coarse individuals” who are willing to duke it out on a level intellectual plane. Frankly, I see you as one of them.

inicidentally, the fellow who did the original post is my husband. Thank you for honoring those rough men who do stand for something. I think you are one of the rough men too. May we have a society that doesn’t need us.

I, luckily, have had very little need to do violence. Sure I was “the big dumb guy*” compared to a lot of my D&D geek friends in high school, so occasionally I did. I really don’t quite consider myself or you as the “rough men” but rather the “slightly coarse individuals” I referred to. I just was actually disagreeing with your husband, I don’t think college should be a shelter….as it is intended as the transition between the sheltered environment of high school and the dog eat dog of the real world.
*BDG…as in I only got 1290 on the SAT and a GPA of 3.15. So still in the top 2% Nationally…but low comparatived to them.

so, would you defend the Hitler Youth and their slogans? There is a very delicate balance of allowing free speech and allowing people to harm others intentionally.
Are people not to react when they are attacked? It seems that there is the ultrasentsitive nonsense claimed by some people, but that devalues the real harm people experience. Should we simply “toughen up” or should we expect others to be less assholes and more humane?

Ron, why do you think aggressive people can do what they want and people who are sensitive have to toughen up?
I support the 1st amendment up to point. I don’t support free speech when that is used to harm others. Do you believe anyone can say anything at any time, no matter what?

More or less, yes I do think aggressive people can SAY/WRITE(not do) what they want and sensitive people do need to toughen up, maybe not when you’re 10…but definitely in college. Gird your loins, people are going to disagree with you. That is, until it is an actual threat, that’s quite different. For instance painting swastikas, you saying you identify with a regime that killed people…that’s a very clear implied threat. However, I also support the crowd that yell “f trump’ not only just because I agree with them(which I do), but because I never accept the ‘silence your opposition’ strategy coming from any point of the political spectrum. Instead I accept “Mock and Belittle your opposition for saying such dumb crap.” Free speech also include after hearing what you have to say, that I get to point out you are, as I called the Trumpites earlier, a hateful moron.

Saying you will do something that you cannot actually do is not a threat. Saying something you can do, that is in violation of the law, is. I.e. if you don’t stop being uppity, my friends and I will lynch you” is a threat; Saying “If you don’t stop being uppity, Federal agents will confiscate your corn crop” is not* Saying “if my guy/party gets elected, he will deport you” is not a threat anymore than “If my Guy gets elected meat eating/guns/not being PC will be illegal” It isn’t a threat, it is, as far as you are concerned, a reason to make sure their opponent gets elected.
*Unless the person is a Federal Agent with possible influence over that happening

I don’t think so. I don’t consider “God will send you to hell” as a threat, but “I will burn you alive” is. But I guess we just disagree on this point.
