Not So Polite Dinner Conversation – oh look, excuses by a Christian on why their god does nothing

A Christian commenter on this blog, “Alexander Phaethon” has written this set of excuses for why his god does nothing at all when it comes to children being killed. I’ve added some paragraphing so it’s not one block of text.

“I am, most likely to annoyance of most, going to cite free will here. It’s very true that multiple times in the Bible God intervened to stop a situation, Jesus’s sacrifice in fact is the best example of this. That being said, the Bible explicitly states that we will face trials and tribulation, so God never said everything would always be sunny and bright.

God gives us free will, that means that some people are going to do the wrong things. God actually does intervene in this though, whether we see it or not. For starters, He told Adam and Eve not to eat the apple. When they did, He gave us, conscience, morality, and a list of rules and commandments with which we can shape our lives in the right direction, and then He sent His Son to die for us so that we might be forgiven when we go astray and have the ability to get to heaven.

It’s not my choice whether or not the atheists here choose to believe this, but I wanted to point two things out here. Number one, a person who writes, according to Nan, a “VERY long” essay attempting to blame a being they, presumably, don’t believes exists, is most likely very bitter about something; I would also question this persons line of thought.

Furthermore, it seems to me that such an endeavor as this essay is such a waste of time; if you don’t believe in God, fine, but at least devote your time to writing something useful. Finally, atheists have long proven that they believe they do not need God, therefore, I cannot understand why they are so upset when He doesn’t intervene; after all, why should an atheist expect God to intervene if they think he doesn’t exist? One final thought, God can intervene miraculously sometimes, but we also can’t foresee how certain acts or situations will effect the future.

As terrible as a shooting is, perhaps God did not intervene because that shooting will profoundly change our world and help us make sure that shootings happen less; in other words, if God had prevented that shooting, maybe He also allowed many future shootings. The point is, we do not have the understanding of God, so why should we blame Him when something bad happens? Rather, we should use tragic events as a means to come together and find solutions to some of these problems, not tear each other down, as some people have tried to do here, and in many places elsewhere.”

Well, he hits all of the classic whines and excuses.

Here’s my response:

Alex, you will cite free will, and I, and most here will just sigh at your ignorance. There is no free will in your bible, and as soon as your god assigned the idiotic “original sin”, free will was done.

The bible also says this god will protect its followers from everything. So all your argument ends up being is a display on how the bible is incoherent.

Let me cite those verses for you.

“7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. 9 Is there anyone among you who, if your child asked for bread, would give a stone? 10 Or if the child asked for a fish, would give a snake? 11 If you, then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” Matthew 7

“19 Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.”” Matthew 18

funny how no exceptions are mentioned here or in the following.

“22 Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. 23 Truly I tell you, if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and if you do not doubt in your heart but believe that what you say will come to pass, it will be done for you. 24 So I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Mark 11

“17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: by using my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.”” Mark 16

unsurprisingly, not a single Christian can do this. Did the bible lie or are you all simply not getting something right?

“12 Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If in my name you ask me[f] for anything, I will do it.” John 14

“7 If you abide in me and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” John 15

“13 Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. 14 Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up, and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective. 17 Elijah was a human like us, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. 18 Then he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth yielded its harvest.” James 5

It is not until 1 John where the excuse that one has to pray for what is already this god’s will, which makes prayer useless and it is a lovely excuse for when the aforementioned promises fail.

“Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” Romans 12

” God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, ” Psalm 91

“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord my whole life long.” Psalm 23 (quite a failure for the “shepherd”)

In Eden, your god said that the entire garden was for humans in the first story, and in the second version it says don’t eat or you will die that day. So we have no mention of magic trees or we have a lie. You get to choose which one is the “real” story, Alex.

This god of yours didn’t want humans to know right and wrong, Alex. It only wanted obedience. The only reason we have a conscience, per your myths, is because Eve ate the apple. The god wanted us ignorant. Eve gave us morality. And then, rather than just resetting things with Adam and EVe, your god throws a tantrum, and blames everyone for what they did, destroying any concept of free will. If I am damned through no fault of my own, there is no free will. Then your god decides, after failing for supposed thousands of years, that it needs a death by torture to make it feel better. That’s simply disgusting.

Then, Alex, you try the usual whine of “oh dear, why do atheists point out how idiotic we are if they don’t believe in it?” It’s because your lies cause real harm, Alex. No one needs to be “bitter” to point out lies. Devoting one’s time to pointing out lies is useful, and happily, here in the US, Chrsitianity is losing followers. From a 90+% belief rate, we are down into the 70s. And in addition to that, Christians all contradict each other, so there aren’t even that many TrueChristians(tm) in existence; they all hate each other.

Your religion depends on victim blaming when its lies and false promises fail. You invent excuses, including that someone didn’t pray “correctly”, wasn’t a “real” Christian, to cling to this harmful nonsense.

You have no evidence that this god intervenes at all, “miraculously” or not. You try to offer the tedious Christian claim of “but but maybe god needs to kill a child for his “plan”” Hmm, if there is a plan, then there is no free will, ifthis god must take the life of someone, the ultimate ceasing of free will.

You are just one more selfish, ignorant Christian, Alex. There is no surprises here with your excuses. You try to claim “but but we can’t understand god” when you claim to constantly understand him when it comes to what morals this god wants, etc. it’s ever so convenient to claim “God’s mysterious ways”. You have no problem at all praising god when something good happens, stealing the honor and responsibility from humans as is the wont of selfish, greedy Christians.

I don’t need kids being literally ripped apart by bullets to “come together” or to “teach”. That you do shows exactly how Christianity is evil. And yes dear, I can say that with my happily subjective morality. I would not accept such atrocities by a human so I certainly wouldn’t from a god.

As for your rules, funny how you and other Christians don’t follow them when you don’t feel like it. You invent reasons why the inconvenient ones don’t apply to you.

The excuses and false claimed used by Alex, and *so* many Christians, are why I stand against Christianity.

  1. Well, I’m honored you considered me to be such a problem that you made a whole ‘nother post about my comment, must mean I got something right. I would have appreciated if you had let me know so I could’ve read it sooner. I will happily be your scapegoat (if that is the correct term) if God’s glory is spread in the process.

It might be argued that pissing on one that was on fire would be a waste of good urine.

    2. Oh dear, Alex needs to feel important. No, Alex, you are just one more Christian who is an object lesson on how poisonous religion is. You aren’t unique or special at all, more is the pity.

It’s so cute that you think that failing is spreading “god’s glory”. You demonstrate just how vile this god would be, if it existed at all. It is wonderfully notable that you can’t refute a single point I made.

    1. Agreed, Bill. This is something that many theists, especially conservative Christians, have trouble grasping. We have higher standards than their god, and wouldn’t worship it even if it existed. We aren’t cowed by power.

      1. Higher standards for God. I love that concept.

Maybe it would help god if they stopped trying to explain god and worked harder on proving god.

        May god help them. 🙂

  2. You can’t argue with a fool..these religious nuts are so consumed with their own feelings of superiority, their own mixtures of hate for others and fear of others, their own small little pea brains judgements of other people and their own twisted mental contortions to actually believe this nonsense and in a god so cruel and mental himself, that it is beyond comprehension and beyond reach.

  3. First, you don’t understand how Ancient Jewish writing works. Chapter 1 which you call the “first story” is an overview. Chapter 2 (Second story) is the addendum of chapter one filling in details. You are absolutely correct original sin did remove freewill. However, the death and resurrection of Jesus restored freewill. Third, you wanted to know why God doesn’t intervene in the evil of the world. Jesus said in Matthew 13, Jesus quotes from the Jewish Isaiah 6:9-10 which states, “Keep on hearing, but do not understand; keep on seeing, but do not perceive.’
    Make the heart of this people dull, and their ears heavy, and blind their eyes;
lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed.” You see Jesus did not institute Christianity. That is a man-made institution. Jesus instituted the kingdom. Those seven scriptures you quoted, are the rights of those who pledge allegiance to that kingdom. In every nation, citizens have rights. It is no different in the Kingdom of God. Most Christians, and and all atheists do not have allegiance to the kingdom. Christians have allegiance to their religion. I am not a Christian, I am a follower of Jesus the Christ, son of the living God. I am sure you will find my response illogical. That’s okay. My job is not to convert you, but simply to engage in dialogue with you.

    1. Jeffrey, you offer nothing new and nothing true. It’s no surprise you are a graduate of Liberty University, quite the diploma mill you have with the constant problems with corruption and gee, started by a false prophet, Jerry Falwell.

The two stories in Genesis are contradictory lists of actions, so they literally can’t be an overview and then details. Let’s compare them:

      Genesis 1

Pre Day 1 – water was already in existence. Earth existed but in chaos. Wind existed.
Day 1 – Light created to form day. Darkness separated to form night.
Day 2 – Dome created to separate water above from other water below. Dome is called sky.
Day 3 – Water below dome is gathered into one place and called “seas”. Dry land appears. Vegatation is created.
Day 4 – Sources of light stuck in dome. Sun is created. Moon is created and is claimed to give its own light. Stars are created.
Day 5 – Living beings created, including “great sea monsters”.
Day 6 – Humans are created, male and female at the same time. Humans are told that every plant on earth is their food, and that every animal eats plants for food.
Day 7 – God must rest from work.

      Genesis 2
Day 1 – earth and heavens made. One stream waters all of the earth. Male human made. Garden planted in a place called Eden to the east of something, containing every tree that is pretty and edible. Tree of life which causes immortality, and tree of the knowledge of good and evil, which provides knowledge of good and evil also in garden.
(Time period passing gets a little less clear but appears all on the same day as the events above)
Man is put in garden to tend it. Told not to eat from the tree of good and evil or he’ll die that same day. Nothing said about tree of life.

God realizes that he should make the man a helper. Makes all animals. Parades them in front of the man to have them named, and for a partner to be chosen. None are suitable for a partner.

God makes woman out of the man’s rib.

I know that original sin makes free will a lie. Alas, nothing in the bible says that the blood sacrifice by torture did any such thing as restoring free will. You’ve simply made that up, which is nothing new for Christians to do.

I do love that you quote Matthew 13 which shows that there is no free will in the world since this god intentionally prevents some people from being able to accept it. It says exactly the opposite as you claim. “10 Then the disciples came and asked him, “Why do you speak to them in parables?” 11 He answered, “To you it has been given to know the secrets[b] of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. 12 For to those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance, but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away. 13 The reason I speak to them in parables is that ‘seeing they do not perceive, and hearing they do not listen, nor do they understand.’ 14 With them indeed is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah that says:“Keep on hearing, but do not understand; keep on seeing, but do not perceive.’Make the heart of this people dull, and their ears heavy, and blind their eyes;lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed.” ”

Such a lovely demosntration of this god preventing people from being able to accept it, by *making* them unable to.

I do love Matthew 13. It also has the parable of the sower. The sower is this god, and this god is either an inocompetent fool since he can’t keep his seed in the field, or is malevolent since he intends that some never can grow, aka accept it, which fits very nicely with the claim about why parables are used as I quoted.

Yep, Jesus didn’t start Christianity, being imaginary. Humans did and you invent your own version, Jeff. You are ever so sure that your version is the only right one, just like every other Christian. What’s amusing is that you have no more “rights” to magic than the Christians you are sure are wrong. Jeff is just another fraud.

I always love when a Christian says it isn’t their job to convert me. Alas, his bible says otherwise: ” “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit 20 and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.””. Jeff just doesn’t want to admit that he is a failure at the great commission and has to whine and say it is up to his god to convert me. Nothing like blaming someone else for your failure, Jeff with the common, “oh dear, it must be god’s will that this person didn’t agree with me, so I’m not a failure and fraud.”

I do wonder, what excuses Jeff give if he sticks around. Will it be that the great commission was “only” for the 11 apostles like preterist (another way Christians disagree on their truth) Christians do? I wonder how far this “dialogue” will go.

I have no vitriol towards you in anyway. You are free to believe or not to believe. My question is if God doesn’t exists why waste your time convincing people he doesn’t. Furthermore the Hebrew translated “made” actually means to appoint. However, I do not subscribe that Genesis refers to initial creation outside of verse 1. In fact, the text seems to indicate that there was already creation prior to the verse two and three. Therefore, it is not initial creation being described it is what Paul calls new creation or if you like “recreation”. I will be glad to share why I think with you. I don’t expect you to buy my “nonsense” and thats fine. I believe in the axiom. I may not agree with what your saying, but I will defend your right to say it. And I will engage in respectful dialogue. However, I will not degrade you or me by getting into a emotional shouting match.

    1. so, Jeff, do show how “as you are going” changes the meaning that Christians are to convert others. If this is the set of verses you are meaning, i can add that and it makes no difference. One can see the greek here and the translation therefrom.

““All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 As you are going, make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit 20 and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.””.”

Again, you appear to be wrong, Jeff. I do enjoy how bible translators, who are mostly Christians, are all over the place and Christians can’t agree on what their bible really means.

It would be great if a Christian has anything new in their arguments. The reason I spend time revealing the false claims of Chrsitians is that your nonsense causes real harm. I do the same to other religions too.

Oh surprise, a Christian just picks and chooses what he “subscribes” to. Christians just make up what they want, further demonstrating that your bible is nonsense. What Jeff is describing is the “gap theory“, one more made up bit of nonsense. I always enjoy watching creationists fail in their competing theories since not one of them has any evidence.

And then we have the ol’ whine of the Christian about how they only want “respectful” dialogue. Sorry, I don’t respect made up nonsense, and will point it out. I have no respect for willful ignorance and lies made up to harm others in the delusion that some god agrees with your very human hates and desires. Jeff has to lie and claim that any argument that shows he is wrong is “emotional”. This is an attempt at gaslighting, the theist insisting that a non-christian can only have emotional reasons for disagreeing with him. Happily, we don’t. The utter lack of supporting evidence for theist claims is quite enough to doubt that any god or gods exist.

      1. Of course it doesn’t change absolute truth doesn’t change. Its not subjective like this post modern world wants it to be. Still why do you care if it causes harm you have no authority to appeal to we are simply STARDUST , FISH TO PHILOSPHER’S. no purpose no reason to respect life because its just chance that we are here anyway. So no our arguments don’t change. We don’t need no new arguments. Just as your arguments are no different than any other atheist. You judge me by a standard that you don’t hold to yourself. That’s fine.

        Like

      2. You have no evidence for your claims or that you have anything like “absolute truth”. Christans all claim this and can’t show it.

I care that your religion harms people since I have empathy for my fellow human. I don’t need to appeal to authority; I only need to question and take action.

Yep, we are stardust, and we have evolved. We have plenty of purpose in our lives and have plenty of reason to respect life, since we are alive. fI rather like being alive and I think everyone else should have the same pleasure. It’s not chance that we are here. it’s the result of physical laws. Happily, we do not have a random Dr. Seussian-style universe.

You need new arguments since your current ones fail. I don’t need new arguments since mine work. You’ve yet to show I’m wrong, Jeff.

I judge you to the same standard that I hold myself to. Where’s your evidence that your particular version of the Chrsitain god is real, Jeff?

        Like

      3. If I am simply chance then why sanctify life? You derive pleasure from life. Suppose I do not. I don’t want others to share in such misery so I kill people then kill myself. What basis do I have to say that is wrong. It becomes subjective. There is no standard. You think I fail and thats fine. My approval does not derive from you.

        Like

      4. I don’t “sanctify” anything. that is a religious term which is meaningless since there are no gods. I do indeed enjoy life. If you kill others who do not agree with you, then you are removing their ability to choose and their personal freedom. Humans do tend to value that and you go against common human morality.

BTW, you aren’t “simply chance”, that’s the usual ignorance of a Christian on how the universe works.

yep, it is entirely subjective, and humans, being human, tend to share some ideas in common. No one needs your god as a “standard” since it isn’t, even if it were real, as described in the bible. Christians like you have no problem in it doing things you would be horrified if a human did them. This shows a subjective morality, dependent on who or what something is and not the objective morality of the action itself. This often devolves into a morality of “might equals right’ with the Christian often claiming that this god can do whatever it wants since it is powerful.

Now, dear, since your god kills people constantly per your bible, do explain the morality of that if life is supposedly precious because of this god?

      5. The “empty tomb” claim is used by many Christian apologists. The problem with it is that Christians can’t agree where the supposed “tomb” is, and there is no evidence there was a tomb or a cruxifiction to fill it.

Add this to the contradictory nonsense in each gospel about the events at this supposed tomb and there is no reason to believe in Christian myths any more than the myths of other religions.

Science and history do not support the claims of the bible at all. Present this supposed support and I will be happy to consider it.

        I’m guessing you won’t.

      6. I have. It’s hilariously bad. Poor ol’ Lee Strobel, he relies on incompetent apologetics. I always enjoy when an apologist tries to claim that mentions of Christians by historians means that the religion has to be true. Alas, it doesn’t work like that. If this were true, then any god who has worshippers mentioned is as real as your god. then he tries the “empty tomb’ claim, when no tomb or crucifiction can be shown to exist or have happened. Amazing how Chrsitians managed to lose the location of their most important site.

Cold Case Chrsitianity is written by J. Warner Wallace and it is full of the same lies as Strobel uses. He also uses the claim of “fine tuning” which is always a good one since he can’t show that anything is “fine tuned” for humans at all. Funny how 99.99999…% of the universe is deadly to humans, and most of the earth is too. I am quite glad that such an incompetent fool is no longer a police officer. I am not out trying to start some local congregation. I am living my life to Jesus. You don’t respect that or want that. It’s okay with me. You do have freewill. Per your bible, there is no free will. As soon as original sin was forced on everyone, and as soon as your god interfered in anything, free will ended.

I’ve evaluated the many, many versions of Christianity a long time ago and found it wanting. It is no different than any other religion, a set of false claims that cannot be shown true. I reject things that have nothing to show that they are true. Santa Claus, God, Allah, fairies, reptiloids, etc.

    2. Jeff, belief is not a choice; i’s a conclusion. It doesn’t make sense. Seriously – a flood that never happened, people coming back to life, and a Talking Snake™? Time to put away childish things like the risible mythology in the Bible.

As to why non-believers criticize Christianity, it’s because we see it as both untrue and psychologically damaging. The world needs sane people to pull us back from the abyss of climate change, a widening gap between rich and poor, and other existential threats to the common good.

The world will not be saved by a demographic that is actively looking forward to the end of the world.

Nor can it be saved by people who see themselves and their fellow travellers as “filthy rags.”

And that’s why -I- have spent the last 18 years criticizing Christianity on the Internet – because it does vastly more harm than good.

      1. i don’t look for the end of the world… nor do i see you as a filthy rag…First it is a choice… you choose what evidence to accept and reject on the way to your conclusion/belief. Second, I do not conclude/believe the world will come to some apocalyptic end. I agree mainstream Christianity has gotten a lot wrong and has done some harmful things but so has no Christians… so it becomes a wash…. Third, I see you as an image bearer of God since you decided to use a biblical reference. The term filthy rags was not directed at the person but the works of a person in relationship to the holiness of God. But since you don’t accept his existence I can see why you would apply it to your self. However, I just wanted to clarify the use of the term. I respect the fact that you have come to your conclusion and spent your time criticizing what you believe to be a harmful fallacy. My problem is that it is hypocritical to expect those who have concluded that Christianity is the best not to do the same. I have always wondered why its okay to convince someone of atheism but not of christianity? It why i do engage with atheists. I do not expect them to convert but neither do I expect them to keep their beliefs to themselves. I believe humanbeings are fundamentally social creatures and as such free exchange of ideas should never be hindered.

      2. Jeff, don’t try to lie to us here. We know what Christianity and the bible says. That you make up different variants is nothing new. You make up your Christianity just like every single Christian does, and your lies are no more true than theirs.

Per your bible, it isn’t a choice, do read Matthew 13 and Romans 9, and John 15, among others.

Christians also can’t agree on waht the nonsense of “image of God” even means. The term filthy rags is aimed at human action and humans are their actions, so the whine of “we love the sinner not the sin” is just a lie to get away from just how vile Christianity is. Neither Astreja nor I apply your disgusting nonsense to ourselves.

It isn’t hypocritical at all to point out how Chrsitainity fails, no matter your invented version. Who cares if you think your imaginary nonsense is the best when it is demonstrably not.

Christianity is harmful, atheism is not. And yes, you’ll probably try the usual lies of how Stalin was awful, ignoring that the commonality of genocidal lunatics is megalomania, not atheism.

You came here to convert others, Jeff. yOu realized you were failing and then had to change your story. That’s the problem with recording media that you have no control over after you write it. You can’t retcon your history here.
