Not So Polite Dinner Conversation – rather sad “But I do fully believe that I need God to exist.”

I found quite a strange post, and strangely honest in some ways, of a women who wants to believe but claims she can’t. And she’ll simply believe anyway.

“God is supernatural. It’s hard to believe in anything we can’t see or feel or touch. That’s normal and understandable. But God is still worth the fight.”

“I need the strength of something much greater and wiser than me. Something that loves me unconditionally and with complete understanding (which a human being can’t provide). I need God. But that’s just me.”

Really? A imaginary being that is a genocidal monster, that kills people for things they didn’t do, and that supports slavery to the point of telling slaves to never seek their freedom?

“Does that mean God is fake? Like, we made him up to comfort us? No. Our need for God does not prove God isn’t real.”

It does mena your imaginary friend is fake, and yes, you did make it up to comfort youself. The need of some people to believe in a entity that agrees with them is strong. And little more than selfish.

“If you no longer want to be an atheist, you don’t have to be, but it might take some time to feel good about a new path. Don’t worry about whether it’ll happen or not, and just see what happens instead. What do you have to lose?

Let’s imagine for a moment that a loving God exists. With God, your life has meaning. You are not alone in this endless universe and you’ll live forever in God’s unconditional love and joy. How does it feel?

Now let’s pretend someone tells you you’re a fool to believe in God. Here’s the good news about that: you do not have to believe them because they ultimately have no idea what they’re talking about.

No one has been able to disprove God — God is beyond science.”

So pascal’s wager, false promises, and ignorance.

  1. Sorry, but I don’t think she makes sense. She asks, “What do you have to lose?”

Seriously? Does she want an answer?

This is root of much new age religious practice. “Well, dang, Bill. There MUST be something. I mean, look around man.” 🙂

And yes. All things “supernatural” are “beyond science.” That’s what the word means. (deep sigh)

  2. Reasoning, is clearly not this persons strong point.

    Pascals Wager? C’mon man…

No one has been able to disprove god? Does that mean I can’t disprove Bigfoot, astrology, the Bermuda triangle, Atlantis, the monster under the bed?

Belief, is the willingness to give up all common sense for a warm fuzzy blanket.
