Not So Polite Dinner Conversation – floods, droughts, and gods

Here in the US, we have a variety of weather which is getting more extreme as climate change happens. theists of various types have insisted that their various gods control the weather.

This week we have two examples of how that doesn’t work:

“Today, Gov. Cox declared Sunday, June 29, 2025 a Day of Prayer and Fasting for Rain as drought conditions intensify across Utah and wildfire risks escalate.

Drought conditions have expanded by 82.9 percent since early June. So far this year, 380 wildfires — 275 human-caused — have burned more than 43,000 acres statewide, stressing farms, ranches, rangelands and wildlife habitat.

“Utah is facing a tough season, and we need both divine help and practical action,” said Gov. Cox. “I invite every Utahn, whatever your faith or belief system, to join me this Sunday in a unified fast and prayer for rain. And while we look heavenward, let’s do our part here at home — fix leaks, water lawns less and use every drop wisely. Small actions, taken together, can make a big difference for our state.”” “Gov. And then this god seems to have missed, and people have suffered terribly:
“A major search and rescue operation is continuing through the night in Texas after flash floods killed at least 24 people and left many girls missing from a Christian summer camp.

There was little warning as the Guadalupe River rose 26 feet (7.9m) in less than an hour and flooding that followed swept away mobile homes, vehicles and holiday cabins where people were spending the 4 July weekend.

Rescue crews are searching for up to 25 children who were among the 750 girls attending the Camp Mystic just outside the town of Kerrville 104km (64.0 miles) north-west of San Antonio.” – “Texas floods kill 24 people and leave many missing from girls’ summer camp”

Curiously, a similar event happened back in 1987.

“Nearly 40 years ago, a flash flood resulted in one of the worst tragedies to ever strike the Texas Hill Country. On the night of July 16, 1987, just outside Comfort, the kids at Pot O’ Gold Christian Camp were settling in for their final night of the retreat, while 30 miles up the Guadalupe River, at the other end of Kerr County, heavy rainfall would turn what had been a sleepy river into a wall of water.

While trying to evacuate the camp, a bus carrying 43 campers never made it across. Sadly, 10 of those on the bus drowned.” – “1987: When the Guadalupe River turned deadly”

Of course,”thoughts and prayers” are offered, and curious how the orange rapist, who has cut funds to FEMA (the US disaster agency), promises help to deep red Texas.

“WASHINGTON (AP) — As the Trump administration weighs the future of the federal agency tasked with responding to disasters, it is ending a key program that has been used by communities across the country to pay for projects designed to help them prepare for natural disasters like flooding and fires.

In a news release Friday, the Federal Emergency Management Agency said it was ending the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities program, calling the move part of efforts to eliminate “waste, fraud and abuse.”

“The BRIC program was yet another example of a wasteful and ineffective FEMA program. It was more concerned with political agendas than helping Americans affected by natural disasters,” the agency said in a statement.

In addition to ending the program going forward, FEMA said it was also cancelling all applications to the program from 2020 to 2023 and that money that was awarded as part of grants but not already distributed would be immediately returned to the federal government.” – “Trump administration ends key grant program that helps communities prepare for disasters”

This god has a track record of missing the mark and having no problem in killing children, often for the supposed sins of their parents. So, before these Christians try to make excuses, and do the usual claims of how their god saved them, but conveniently forgetting about who it didn’t, perhaps they’ll take a moment to consider how their religion fails and makes them have to invent pious nonsense to cling to their belief.

Addendum: MTG, a completely moronic christian, is sure that humans are manipulating the weather. Again, showing that her imaginary friend is impotent.

“Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) said Saturday she plans to introduce a bill aimed at tackling “weather modification.”

“I am introducing a bill that prohibits the injection, release, or dispersion of chemicals or substances into the atmosphere for the express purpose of altering weather, temperature, climate, or sunlight intensity. It will be a felony offense,” she wrote in a Saturday post on X.” – “Greene to introduce ‘weather modification’ bill”

Addendum: yep, here come the “thoughts and prayers”:

The Holy Father particularly mentioned the girls who were at the Christian summer camp. Some two dozen of them are still missing.

Pope Leo spoke in his native English after leading the midday Angelus today at the Vatican, to assure his prayers and condolences for the victims of the flooding in Texas.

The death toll was at 52 at the time of publication, just under an hour after the Holy Father expressed his prayers. There are 27 girls from a Christian summer camp who remain missing.

Among the dead were at least 15 children.

The Pope said:

Greetings to the English speaking pilgrims. I would like to express sincere condolences to all the families who have lost loved ones, in particular their daughters, who were at the summer camp, in the disaster caused by flooding of the Guadalupe river in Texas in the United States. We pray for them.”

strange how this god caused the problem per the cult, so why pray to it when this is what it wanted?

  1. If it is gods will, prayer is just asking for more trouble I’d think. “How dare you question the dogs will!” Xians, logic is not their strong point.

Not surprising the Republican thugs in charge want to blame the weather agency they just gutted, for the Texas disaster. Logic ain’t their strong point ether.
