Not So Polite Dinner Conversation – yes, the shroud of turin is still a fake

More evidence the shroud is a fake:
“Recently, a study using 3D modeling with MakeHuman, Blender and CloudCompare has added more evidence to the debate. The study, published in Archaeometry, compares digital imprints of a three dimensional human figure and a low-relief artistic rendering—similar to a flattened statue—of a human onto a flat sheet.

The idea is that when a 3D object is wrapped with a 2D sheet, like a piece of cloth, the resulting imprint is distorted and appears to be much wider than when you look straight at the 3D object. This somewhat intuitive outcome is referred to as the Agamemnon Mask effect. The Agamemnon Mask is a gold funerary mask discovered at the Bronze Age site of Mycenae in Greece that looked like it had been rolled out flat after fitting to a face.” – Shroud of Turin image matches low-relief statue—not human body, 3D modeling study finds

Add this to the fact it doesn’t fit the bible description, the dating is wrong, and a 1st century jewish man wouldn’t look like this, etc.

  1. I find it matters little if at all what scientific evidence is presented to the believers of this myth. I have challenged a number of the proponents of this obvious forgery on the veracity of their claims and have been met with ad hominem attacks and slurs as an atheist and non-believer. They want to make this true and their desperate need to believe in such things is palpable; they simply must have it be true and they’ll burn down any argument to the contrary as heretical, blasphemous venom.

Once you believe, truly buy-in to this mythology, you can make yourself believe anything, and this is a classic case of same.

    1. I was just thinking that. Consider the incredible number of people who dismiss our obvious relationship to apes, in favor of a story that a God invented us, and women are descended from a rib in a man’s ribcage. If you really throw yourself at this, the entire old testament reeks of ‘tell me a story” and make sure the little guy wins.

  2. Science, a thorn in religions side, since the scientific method became a thing. They have their own creation science now donchaknow? Because all that actual science stuff is so mean. It won’t conform to their silly beliefs dammit! So they play make believe in science too lol.

  3. Yeah, those are the same beliefs that allow Christians to play at being persecuted since all those mean scientists said a holy relic isn’t holy or a relic! Tsk.

  4. Isn’t it interesting? It shouldn’t matter if it’s what Jesus was wrapped in or not. Faith should not need a sheet to validate itself. If it were true/real, I would still be me and atheist. This is right up there with Jesus on toast, except that the toast really is toast and it does look like the image of some shite guy with thorns or horns.

But believers want the shroud to be a miracle, even though the Bible makes no such claim.

So, yeah, they’re pissed. Not the first time.
