What the Boss Likes – my sanctum sanctorum in process

You may or may not have heard of the term highly sensitive person (HSP). It’s where a human is more sensitive than normal to stimuli, but it isn’t autism. You can get more information on it at these various websites, The Highly Sensitive Person, What Is a Highly Sensitive Person?, and a website with a lot of articles about it, Highly Sensitive Refuge.

So, I am one of these, for good or for bad. I decided a needed a space that I could tune out the world, that would be quiet, soothing, etc. We have an extra room that had started becoming just a place to gather clutter and cats. So that became my project.

This is what I had to start with, a white ceiling fan (newly painted a dark oiled bronze metallic here), this weird pink/brown/gray on the walls, a border from the early 90s, etc.

The paint is now on, and I used Clare paint, which is really great (no compensation, it’s just really good and little to no odor, which is great for my crappy lungs).

Goodnight Moon is the ceiling, and Field Trip is the walls. When my spouse opened Field Trip, he was amused since it looked exactly like US army olive drab. Happily, it dried darker and the eggshell finish keeps it from look like a jeep. Still have some touch ups to make.

It looks a bit dark since we had some flame light bulbs in the ceiling fan to see how it would look. And there’s our monster gray beanbag. The 60’s dresser will be repurposed somewhere else in the house and the DIY computer desk will be removed. In its place will be an electric fireplace (happily the heat and fake flames are seperate so I can have the flames whenever I want them):

And some bookshelves to each side.

The beanbag will remain, and this will be added:

I can lay down on it, if slightly curled up and it even fits my rather tall spouse 🙂 The cats have already taken posession.

I’ll be adding garnet velvet curtains (jewel tones and dark tones are my favorites obviously) to the window and doorway and these window films, bottom and top:

The oriental rug in an earlier photo will be kept and another couple will be layered on it. The other wall across from the fireplace will have a dragon tapestry we’ve had for years and shelves for our collection of curiosities.

And there will be a cat tree so I have at least *some* chance of sitting on the loveseat. No computers allowed, just a bluetooth player for music if needed. I often prefer as much silence as possible.

Stay tuned for the completed sanctuary.

  1. Nice! Although I’m most jealous of your blue loveseat/sofa. We have a bunch of clutter in my house, not ghastly but neither I nor my husband have the health (for now) to go through what we should. A quiet room sounds just like what the doctor ordered.

    1. heh, yep, it’s paneling, circa sometime in the 1960s. Most of the rooms in our house are covered with it, and since I just can’t handle drywalling the entire place, it has gotten painted. You should see the paneling covered by *cork squares* we’re still dealing with in our living room. The prior owners covered the walls with them and when we moved in, the room was dark brown. The only thing we could think to do with them is paint them like grey rock and have a vaguely medieval theme going.

Everything going quite nicely. Just have to get this crazy big mirror I found up and a pair of bookcases on each side of the electric fireplace.
