Not So Polite Dinner Conversation – “you know….morons”

There’s a good opinion piece on CNN about Blazing Saddles on its 50th anniversary year, one of my most favorite movies.

“In 2024, Charlie Kirk can get a big platform to insult Martin Luther King. But you’re really not supposed to outright say that rural White MAGA voters — the “people of the land” — are deplorable racist dunderheads. You’re supposed to be respectful. But Blazing Saddles, 50 years ago, said that treating racists with respect is BS — even if those racists look like your grandma, even if those racists live in small towns and hang out in diners.

If a movie like Brooks’ masterpiece were made today, the left would love it. It’s the right who would recognize, slowly and dimly, that they were being insulted, and howl in rage — as, hopefully, they will howl after reading this article. The best way to honor “Blazing Saddles” is to offend some racists.”

the following clip does have the n-word in it, as does the original movie. As the article says “Most of the rest of the film, though, isn’t indulging in edgy racism like, say, right-wing gutter pundit Charlie Kirk, who attacked Martin Luther King, Jr. on Martin Luther King day this year. Instead, “Blazing Saddles” puts racial slurs in the mouths of people who are clearly marked as the bad guys. In that sense, it’s similar to Quentin Tarantino’s 2012 antiracist Western, “Django Unchained.”

    1. yep. unfortuantely they are rampant where i grew up.

btw, the book is great but I have to consume it slowly to let my brain cool down. It reminds me of reading a combination of douglas adams and the illuminati trilogy in brain effort.

  1. Beautifully put. A frightening number of people in every western country, following the example of MAGA, is treating Mein Kampf not as a frightening warning of what can happen when the Right takes control, but as a manual for how to succeed this time.

    Oh, and love the quotes!

  2. Awesome quotes. I worry for you all that the orange tanned faced man gets back in again. He does need to be in a nursing home with a mock up of the oval office, not the real one. But instead, don’t tell him he was re-elected, just remind him that he never lost 😉 .
