Blog posts about this are a dime a dozen, but I wanted to document that the Harrisburg paper has hopefully the last screed by a scared old man who wants to play pretend that he and only he knows what his imaginary friend wants. Billy Graham, anti-semite and self-annointed prophet (he was sure that by 1952, his god would return, oops) and determiner of which religions are “cults” and which are not, has decided to try to scare everyone into voting for his choice for president. No matter that Mitt Romney is part of a cult, as declared by Mr. Graham himself, he’s still the person that Mr. Graham wants as president of the United States. Again, like in my post here, we can see that some Christians are willing to do anything, including ignore their own version of their own religion if that means they might get more power in the US. In Billy’s own words:“A cult is any group which teaches doctrines or beliefs that deviate from the biblical message of the Christian faith. It is very important that we recognize cults and avoid any involvement with them. Cults often teach some Christian truth mixed with error, which may be difficult to detect.….
Some of these groups are Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormons, the Unification Church, Unitarians, Spiritists, Scientologists, and others.”
Now the word “Mormons” is gone. Unforunately for Billy, he, his god, and webpage staff still don’t know html very well and his website still has it as a keyword that’ll lead you right to those culty pages. Hmmm, I wonder, are they keeping the search terms hot since they are sure that they’ll go right back to hating Mormonism again as soon as Romney loses???
Mr. Graham’s message reads as follows here in PA:
“Vote Biblical Values, Tuesday, November 6, 2012 – The legacy we leave behind for our children, grandchildren and this great nation is crucial. As I approach my 94th birthday, I realize this election could be my last. I believe it is vitally important that we cast our ballots for candidates who base their decisions on biblical principles and support the nation of Israel. I urge you to support those who protect the sanctity of life and support the biblical definition of marriage between a man and a woman. Vote for biblical values this November 6 and pray with me that America will remain one nation under God.”
Now, we see that Billy has his own ideas what the bible really says about various things. He shows his unfortunate willful ignorance about what his bible actually says and it isn’t what he claims. You’d think someone who has been a pastor so long would be a bit more honest, but as anyone who has gone to more than one church and heard more than one pastor or priest, these “good Christians” don’t often agree on what they claim their god “really” wants. Shall we listen to Billy or the Unitarians (whoops, one of those *cults* just like Mormonism ) or the United Church of Christ? Who else does Billy want to call a cult? Seems that it simply comes down to “those who don’t agree with him and send him money”.
The bible does have a lot of laws e.g. principles. It declares that genocide if okay if its claimed that this Judeo/Christian god is for it. It says that killing people who do not believe in this god is perfectly fine and demands that it is done, even to family members. Does Billy want this done?
It does define marriage and it is a property arrangement between two men, father and husband, using a woman as the newly traded property. Does Billy want to go back to that? Evidently he does, since he sure is about using only biblical nonsense to define marriage. Women in marriage count for nothing, they are to be obedient and controlled, just as the church is supposed to be to its god/savior. No questioning, just accept what you are told and do whatever someone asks of you in this god’s name. Care to have a marriage like that, my fellow women? I am married and my marriage is nothing like Billy would want me to have per his supposedly “biblical” principles. Would he like to see my marriage mean nothing too? Not legally recognized, that I could not care for the person I love, that any sex we would have would have to be approved by his inqusition? Oh, there I go again, another ‘net search about Graham and the Roman Catholic Church and well, the froth is flying from “good Christians” who are sure that Billy is in Benny’s hip pocket. Just hilarious. 🙂
How about all of those other biblical principles that Billy touts, you know those “ten” commandments that aren’t limited to those first ten at all? Nothing at all says only follow these and you can ignore the rest at your convenience. Would Billy require that we kill those who dare work on the Sabbath? Those are biblical principles too, so how does Billy think we should determine which his god “really” meant? Shall we listen to only him and his version of Christianity, deciding that all other versions and all other religions are false? Again, how do we determine this?
He also says that we should vote for someone who supports Israel. As most Christians, desperate for the “end times” and who invokes the term “synagogue of Satan”, the only reason that Billy wants Israel supported is for his god to destroy it and destroy those Jews who dare not to accept the claims of Billy himself. He was quite the anti-semite, when he thought no one was listening. Saying about Jews, “They don’t know how I really feel about what they’re doing to this country.” In a reality that Billy evidently can’t comprehend, we have two presidential candidates that support Israel, both to degrees that I find ridiculous for a country that has committed espionage against the US. Poor Billy, 94 years old and his god still isn’t back yet, no matter how many times Billy promised it was coming soon.
Billy also brings up the matter of the “sanctity of life”. As always, he doesn’t mean that all life is sacred, far from it. The bible never says all life is sacred, it never even says every human life is sacred; and demonstrates that by the wholesale slaughter of humans from the magical “flood”, to the murder of David’s son for his father’s sins, to the declaration that those who do not obey this god are worthy of death stated repeatedly in both the old and new testaments. Now, one of the more interesting things is that Billy doesn’t even agree with the GOP or his new found Mormon friends here. Billy has said that rape and incest are reasons for allowing an abortion (google that and see the froth fly). How does his version of the “sanctity of life” square with someone who would “delightedly” sign a law that would forbid all abortions? Is Billy lying about his position as convenient again? I do enjoy when Christian “pro-life” websites show just how lacking in agreement these “good Christians” are when they spew all sorts of hatred at Graham and how Billy himself is “responsible” for abortions.
And finally, Billy wants to invoke prayer, that this will help the United States remain a “nation under God”; his version of this god, no others need apply. Of course, he knows that prayer fails and decides that he needs to tell everyone to vote like he does. This of course breaks the law of the US, if not technically, then in the spirit of Billy’s words. We know he is advocating for Romney, and all of the code messages in the world don’t disguise this fact. Billy is telling an intentional lie, intentionally flouting the laws and government supposedly put in place by his god (Romans 13, no exceptions mentioned), and showing that again that his religion is no more than a convenience for him. This should show that Billy has no belief in what he claims at all, but only wants a nation under him and what he finds expedient.
I thought I was cynical but it seems that those who trot out religion to support their politics, and who lie as is convenient about that religion, are the most direly and depressingly cynical of all.
