Not So Polite Dinner Conversation – FFRF’s update on various stories which involve “God’s Promises”

I’m a proud member of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, and they put out a weekly wrap up and daily emails. Here’s a link to this week’s wrap up.

In it, it mentions this “Texas resolution has misplaced faith in God’s promises – At the state level, we’re strongly opposing a Texas House resolution that would designate for the next 10 years April as “Promise Month” — referring to God’s faithfulness in keeping his promises. Based exclusively on numerous bible verses and false declarations such as “America was founded upon Biblical principles and Christian values,” the Texas Legislature is effectively endorsing Christianity as the state-sanctioned religion.”

Curious how this god of this religion fails in all of its promises. And as usual, the Christians go out of their way to lie and claim that the US is a “christian nation”. The founders went out of their way to ignore the bible when it came to creating the constitution.

Let’s look at some of those promises that the bible has this god making, and how they’ve failed miserably:

Psalm 91
You who live in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.’ For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence;he will cover you with his pinions,    and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.
You will not fear the terror of the night, or the arrow that flies by day, or the pestilence that stalks in darkness,    or the destruction that wastes at noonday.

A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand,  but it will not come near you.You will only look with your eyes  and see the punishment of the wicked.

Because you have made the Lord your refuge, the Most High your dwelling-place,10 no evil shall befall you,  no scourge come near your tent.

11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.12 On their hands they will bear you up,  so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.13 You will tread on the lion and the adder, the young lion and the serpent you will trample under foot.

14 Those who love me, I will deliver;  I will protect those who know my name.15 When they call to me, I will answer them;  I will be with them in trouble,  I will rescue them and honour them.16 With long life I will satisfy them, and show them my salvation.”

The Holocaust certainly was a major fail with this.

And for those Christians who will insist that this is the “Old Testment” and doesn’t apply to them

Luke 12

22 He said to his disciples, ‘Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. 24 Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! 25 And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life?

26 If then you are not able to do so small a thing as that, why do you worry about the rest? 27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. 28 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith!

29 And do not keep striving for what you are to eat and what you are to drink, and do not keep worrying. 30 For it is the nations of the world that strive after all these things, and your Father knows that you need them. 31 Instead, strive for his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

32 ‘Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell your possessions, and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

And unsurprisngly, the plight of humans in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo shows that this god does nothing yet again. To laud such failure shows just how oblivious, arrogant and selfish Christians can be when it comes to blindly touting their god.

  1. Yep. Fortunately, the wackos seldom affect me on a daily basis other than my sense of shame. We have school vouchers now. Still, I hate them.

The dictator recently took our AG for a post in the dictatorship, so the whole nation is threatened by nuts, but you already knew that.

Do they ever consider that if the USA was founded as a Christian nation that they would not have to work so hard to turn it into one?
